About Options Bytown

Since 1989, Options Bytown has provided permanent homes and support services for people who need help to live independently.

It operates three apartment complexes in central Ottawa that house 128 men and women.

Options Bytown also supports hundreds of tenants living in buildings owned by the two largest social housing providers, Ottawa Community Housing and Centretown Citizens Ottawa.

Some of the services Options Bytown offers include; housing case management, prevention of evictions, crisis intervention, referrals to various community resources, lifeskills training, social and recreational activities, computer training and health and nutritional counselling.

Options Bytown is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The board manages a number of policy committees including finance, fundraising, new development, and human resources.

Options Bytown is funded by the City of Ottawa, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada.

In 1987, a coalition of concerned Ottawa residents and community groups joined forces to address the growing homelessness problem in response to the United Nations proclamation of the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless.

Options Bytown was established as a more desirable alternative to emergency shelter accommodation. It was recognized that permanent supportive housing is a better way to meet the needs of those men and women with a history of homelessness.

Options Bytown’s first building opened its doors in the heart of Ottawa’s Byward Market in 1989. The building houses approximately 65 tenants on five floors. In 1992, a new building was inaugurated on Gilmour Street, in Centretown. This building is home to another 60 tenants.

Housing plus support …

handkeys2Options Bytown and other HousingPlus organizations provide services and housing for people who face social isolation and other complex challenges in Ottawa – individuals and families who may have very low incomes, a history of homelessness or special needs that may relate to mental illness, HIV/AIDS or substance use. There are approximately 800 tenants living in HousingPlus units in Ottawa today. Experts estimate that at least another 2000 units are needed.

Housing plus community …

HousingPlus reduces reliance on costly emergency, health and social services and, more importantly, helps people to be strong and successful members of the community. Since they now have housing and on-site support, tenants build relationships and a sense of community within their buildings and are encouraged to contribute to the health and safety of their neighbourhoods.

Housing plus you …

… equals stronger and safer neighbourhoods

Options Bytown relies on the support and contributions from all sectors and from people in the community … people like you.
